Is Terrorism Ever Justified? Can it Succeed?

I'm really excited to debate this topic because I feel it is one of the most pertinent to our time. Ever since the attacks on 9/11, terrorism has been at the forefront of many of the policies of the United States, both foreign and domestic.

Terrorism has been painted in the most negative of lights; an evil attack by a foreigner on a nation's home soil. However, it is defined by the United States Department of Defense as, "the unlawful use of -- or threatened use of -- force or violence against individuals or property to coerce or intimidate governments or societies, often to achieve political, religious, or ideological objectives (FM 100-20, Military Operations in Low Intensity Conflict, 5 December 1990; and Joint Pub 1-02, Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms, 12 April 2001, as amended through 9 June 2004)." There is no rhetoric of good vs. evil in the DoD definition; merely lawful vs. unlawful. And as many terroristic actions are directed against a State, of course they are going to be deemed unlawful.

Terrorism is not only of the religious extremist variety, as the DoD definition clearly demonstrates. Think about the Irish Republican Army operating in Great Britain, or the Chechens in Russia. These factions are one page in the history book away from being seen as "freedom fighters" instead of "terrorists". In fact, by the DoD definition, the United States itself was guilty of terrorism during the Revolutionary period- Tarring and Feathering, looting of the homes of British officials and the like. So then, are there circumstances under which terrorism is an acceptable practice? Are there really black and white definitions of what constitutes terrorism as opposed to expression, or revolution?

Next: Can Terrorism ever truly work? If a State caves under terroristic demands, won't that just encourage the terrorists to keep demanding more? A specific example: If a State gives in to the separatist demands of a terrorist faction and gives them independence, doesn't that just open the door for more separatist factions to demand legitimacy? States, it would seem, have much more at stake than just each individual terrorist's demands; one sign of weakness and the floodgates are opened for infinite others. Does that mean that a State can never give in to a single terroristic demand, making terrorism an illegitimate form of negotiation?

Even though I framed the topic from a United States standpoint, I'd love to hear from people who have a global opinion on the issue as well. Specific examples and well-cited facts are encouraged, but not necessarily a requisite for debate...enjoy!

Happy World Philosophy Day!

Today's topic comes from the lovely Christen Brandt, which is cribbed from this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7739493.stm . In honor of World Philosophy Day, the article presents four philosophical questions with a short description of each. I'm only going to put up the first one, because I think it's the most inflammatory of the four, and will probably generate the most rousing debate. However, leave a comment or email me if you want to discuss any of the others, and I'll make a new thread for it. Happy debating!

1. SHOULD WE KILL HEALTHY PEOPLE FOR THEIR ORGANS?

Suppose Bill is a healthy man without family or loved ones. Would it be ok painlessly to kill him if his organs would save five people, one of whom needs a heart, another a kidney, and so on? If not, why not?

Consider another case: you and six others are kidnapped, and the kidnapper somehow persuades you that if you shoot dead one of the other hostages, he will set the remaining five free, whereas if you do not, he will shoot all six. (Either way, he'll release you.)

If in this case you should kill one to save five, why not in the previous, organs case? If in this case too you have qualms, consider yet another: you're in the cab of a runaway tram and see five people tied to the track ahead. You have the option of sending the tram on to the track forking off to the left, on which only one person is tied. Surely you should send the tram left, killing one to save five.

But then why not kill Bill?

Pop vs. Soda vs. Coke

Soda, Pop, or Coke?

Which is right, and why?

(Even though everybody smart should know that it is called SODA, we'll entertain this topic for debate.)

Forms of Government

There are all sorts of theories of governments out there in the world, but which one has the best chance of working out the best for its people? Should a government worry about that? Is the solution the far right of Fascism? After all, Mussolini did make the trains run on time, and Hitler rebuilt up a stable, viable German economy from depression. The far leftist Socialism doesn't sound too bad either, no more alienation due to your work, owning the means of production and getting a 100% collective return on your labor. Or maybe you don't fall anywhere on the political spectrum, choosing rather that we should live in a state of natural Anarchy, making our own decisions and fending for ourselves. Does democracy actually work, and is there such thing as true democracy?

Does God Exist?

There is hardly a more hotly contested, more difficult to resolve debate than this one, so why don't we just jump right in with it? Do you think that there is a Creator, a man with a plan behind this whole mess that is our planet? Is life just a random set of occurrences, or is there something more to it? If there is, what form does He/She/It/They take? Why doesn't He/She/It/They make themselves known more obviously to humanity? Are we born simply through biology, and when we die, are we simply just going to rot in the ground? Or is there something beyond it all?

I'd love to see this splinter off into lots of small debates about evolution/creation, the nature of God, the afterlife, anything. Take it and run with it.

First Post!

Yes, I did it. I got a blog.

This may come as a real surprise to many of you, for as many of you know, I have always in the past been a sworn enemy of the Blog. I thought blogs were nothing but cries for attention; often annoying testaments to somewhat boring lives. I assumed bloggers were egocentric, bothersome, and narrow-minded . Truthfully, the Internet is still dominated by those people, and always will be, but recently I came to the realization that maybe - just maybe - I was wrong. Yep, I said it. I realized that there was, and had been, something beautiful salvaged from this train wreck that was the so-called "Blogosphere". Maybe there was a way to take the trash of the Internet and turn it into treasure, maybe I too could be one of those rare technological alchemists who can turn the leaden Blog into gold.

And so, welcome to the safe intellectual haven that is Open Mike Nite. It is here that I wish to plant the seeds of debate; to spark interest in controversy, to get people riled up and discuss things we deem important, ridiculous, unfair, and insulting. I want to talk about everything, from politics to religion to science to the superiority of Coke or Pepsi, or why Jurassic Park was the best movie ever made. I want to foster debate, a return to the intellectual clubs of the Enlightenment, I want people to get interested and fired up. I want to invite everybody from every possible point on every possible spectrum; the Atheists, the Socialists, the religious Republicans, the people who are wishy-washy about everything, heck, even the Canadians. All you need is an interest in anything ever, and a willingness to back up why you think it's awesome.

I want to try to get a few threads going by the end of the week, and this Blog will only be as good as you all want to make it, so make sure you leave ideas for topics in the comments section. The way I think this is going to work at the beginning is that once we have some topics, I'll write a post about it and then my views on it (it's my blog after all.). Then we start a chain of debate flowing from the initial topic. Make them as inflammatory, interesting, contested, or just plain ridiculous as you want, this is Open Mike Night, after all. Don't hold back, and tell everyone you know!

Look for more updates really soon.

-Mike
